PORTRAITS

Introduction

Originally, I chose the title 'Close Up' for my project, however I when I began researching and brainstorming ideas for content, I swayed in the direction of portraiture. Once I had done this, I found sticking to just macro portraits rather limiting, so I changed my topic to 'Portraits'. During my 'Portraits' project, I want to experiment and photograph human emotion, the human body, macro photography, the difference made by background and the effect of colour/grayscale.

Below is a brief plan outlining some topics and artists I would like to explore during my project (this has obviously changed and developed throughout).

'PORTRAITS' PROJECT PLAN

ARTIST RESEARCH:

  • Mark Seliger (very successful portraiture photographer who uses quite a simplistic common style typical for portraiture).

EXPERIMENTATION: Expressing Emotion

  • How can you capture different emotions?

  • What facial features/body positions portray certain emotions?

  • Use a plain background so this is unable to aid emotion portrayal.

Plutchik's wheel of emotions:

  • love

  • interest

  • happiness

  • trust

  • boredom

  • sadness

  • fear

  • anger.

RECORDING: Variation created through Editing

  • Similar images (same model, costume, make up)/different backgrounds.

  • Effect of background colour and texture, compared to plain background of experimentation?

FINALISING AN OUTCOME: Using Photography to Raise Awareness

  • Choose a personal project/topic.

  • Chance to attempt self portraiture?

  • How can portraiture/outcomes of this project be used for advertisement/awareness?

Before starting my project, I took some practice portraits to become more familiar with the topic. This first attempt was incredibly successful and I was really happy with the photographic outcomes, which made me very excited to properly start this project. The photographs from that first shoot are shown below.
